Mélodie Bonnat, painting conservator, project coordinator

Mélodie est restauratrice du patrimoine spécialisée en peinture, diplômée de l'Institut national du patrimoine en 2010. Depuis, elle a participé à de nombreux projets de conservation-restauration tant en France qu'à l'étranger (Chine, Inde, Uzbékistan). Elle travaille au Sikkim depuis juillet 2013, époque de la première phase du projet du Lachen Mani Lhakhang. Maintenant, elle assiste le Lamoteng Charitable Trust dans la mise en place des étapes de restauration du bâti.

Mélodie is a French painting conservator graduated from the Institut national du patrimoine in 2010. Since then, she participated to numerous conservation projects in France, China, India and Uzbekistan. Working in Sikkim since 2013 when she participated to the first phase of the Lachen project, she is now helping the Lamoteng Charitable Trust to keep the project moving forward!

Devadeep Gupta, architect, co-manager

Devadeep est un architecte indien et designer travaillant avant tout dans les domaines de l'architecture alternative, de la conservation et du street art. Diplômé en 2012 d'une école d'architecture au Cashmere, il a pratiqué de manière espiègle l'architecture traditionnelle se méfiant de son côté consumériste et commercial, préférant se concentrer sur les projets à échelle localisée. Il travaille avec le Lamoteng Charitable Trust à la supervision des travaux de conservation du temple de Lachen Mani Lhakhang en corrélation avec les autres membres de l'équipe.

Devadeep is an Indian architect and designer working primarily in the fields of alternate architecture, conservation and street art/installations. Being graduated in 2012, he has been sly towards consumerist and commercial architecture; instead focussing towards more grass-root level work. Currently he is associated with the Lamotheng Charitable Trust to overlook the conservation of the Lachen Mani Lhakhang along with his team members.

Robert Fierret, Master artisan in Dry Stone Masonry

Robert est un Maître Artisan d’Art, Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant, Trésor Vivant de l’Artisanat, Formateur en techniques de Pierre Sèche, Décors à la chaux, Couvertures tuile, Lauzes, genêt et autres techniques du Patrimoine.

Mélodie a contacté Robert en mai 2015 pour résoudre des problèmes de structure en Pierre Sèche pour la restauration du temple Mani Lhakhang à Lachen au Sikkim. Etant spécialiste en la matière, il a bien voulu étudier ce projet sur documents graphiques et photographiques, appuyés d’explications détaillées. Une fois les problèmes identifiés, Robert a décidé d’organiser la restauration en chantier formation avec l’appui d’artisans locaux, mais aussi de deux compagnons du Devoir préalablement formés à cette technique.

C’est grâce à la rencontre entre Mélodie Bonnat et Robert Fierret, formateur pour le compte de l’Association Ouvrière des Compagnons du Devoir et du Tour de France (association promouvant le travail des artisans bâtisseurs en France), que Lucile et Martin ont pu rejoindre le projet.

Robert awarded with prestigious titles like Master Artisan and Living treasure in France, he is an instructor for the traditional building technique like dry stone masonry, traditional roofing, decoration in lime plaster etc. Melodie contacted Robert in May 2015 to consult the structural problems of the Mani Lhakhang Monastery, which is a dry stone masonry construction. Robert being the specialist of the dry stone masonry agreed right away to study the monument through the visual documents provided. As the major problems was identified, the restoration project was planned along with an objective of training the local masons as well as two companions, Lucile and Martin, from the Association Ouvrière des Compagnons du Devoir et du Tour de France.

Robert

Prakash Shutrodhar, Carpenter 

Prakash est menuisier charpentier depuis 35 ans. Il a de nombreuses expériences de projets de restauration de monastères sikkimais et vient de terminer le projet de restauration du temple de Singhik au sud de Lachen. Prakash et son équipe vont non seulement réaliser l’échafaudage pour que les maçons puissent restaurer le mur pignon du temple, mais il va aussi rénover les charpentes et les couvertures des deux cuisines attenantes cette année. En fonction des fonds, il pourra progressivement réaliser les autres travaux de bois nécessaires : mise ne place d’un plancher, restauration des portes, de l’autel etc.

Prakash has 35 years of experience in carpentry. He has undertaken various roof restoration project of the Tibetan monasteries, Singhik monastery in Sikkim being one of them which was completed in July 2015. This year, he will not only build up the scaffolding for the restoration of the stone masonry wall of the temple, but he will also restore the kitchens roofs. When fund comes, he will also realize various necessary wood work in the temple such as a new wooden floor in the main hall, the restoration of the doors and altar etc.

Prakash

Lucile Robidou, Landscape Gardener, Stone worker Volunteer 

Lucile est Compagnon du Devoir, elle s’est formée et travaille depuis 7 ans dans le milieu du jardin (Bac STAV, BTS AP, Licence AP Infographie). Son parcours professionnel l’a amenée à travailler sur le terrain, mais aussi à faire partie d’équipes de dessinateurs en bureau d’étude. Ayant soif d’apprendre et souhaitant acquérir le maximum d’expérience professionnelle, elle s’est engagée comme volontaire pour la restauration du Lachen Mani Lhakhang sous la direction de Robert Fierret.

Lucile is a Duty Companion (Association Ouvrière des Compagnons du Devoir et du Tour de France) she is part of a famous association which promotes the traditionnal building craftmanship France. She is undergoing the training in landscape gardening since 7 years and has several working experience on site and in garden planning offices. Willing to enrich her professional experience, she volunteers on the Lachen Mani Lhakhang restoration project under the supervision of Robert Fierret.  

Lucile

Martin Rodier, Landscape Gardener, Volunteer Stone worker, Project reporter

Martin est Jardinier-Paysagiste et pratique la maçonnerie de pierre sèche. Comme Lucile il est Compagnons Du Devoir. Passionné par le voyage, le partage et le soutien humanitaire, il a la chance de se joindre au projet de restauration du Lachen Mani Lhakhang qui est une véritable aventure. Sur le terrain, il travaille sous la direction de Robert Fierret et de plus, il filme le travail et le quotidien afin de pouvoir partager l’expérience vécue par tous.

Martin, a landscape and garden builder by profession has experience in dry stone masonry as well. As Lucile, he is a Duty Companion. Travel lover, he enjoys sharing experiences and is keen to participate to humanitarian operations. He feels lucky to be a part of this incredible restoration project in Lachen Sikkim. ON the site, he works under the supervision of Robert Fierret. Moreover, he is the reporter of the project, working on the interviews and visual documentation of this 2nd phase of the project.

Martin

Anie Joshi, Architect specialized in Heritage, 

Translator French-Nepali

Anie, est architecte originaire du Népal. Elle a validé une spécialisation en Architecture et Patrimoine dans un cursus à Paris. Elle a travaillé avec le Département d’Archéologie du Népal et l’UNESCO Katmandou pour la réhabilitation et la restauration du Patrimoine au Népal qui été endommagé par l’intense tremblement de terre de mai 2015. Polyglotte, elle maîtrise le népalais, l’anglais et le français, elle est donc la traductrice attachée à Robert Fierret pour faciliter la communication entre les artisans pendant le projet.

Anie, a Nepalese architect with specialization in Architecture and Heritage from Paris has been involved in the planning of the rehabilitation and restoration of the cultural heritage damaged by the 2015 earthquake in Nepal working closely with UNESCO office in Kathmandu and Department of Archaeology in Nepal. Multi-lingual with proficiency in Nepali, English and French language she will be facilitating the communication between the French Master Mason Robert and the Locals participants during the project.

Chinkiap Lachenpa, stagiaire, local trainee

Chinkiap est né et a grandi à Lachen. Il est le fils de la chef administrative des femmes de Lachen qui prient dans le Lachen Mani Lhakhang. Chinkyap est dynamique, il a déjà des expériences dans le domaine de la construction et a travaillé comme charpentier et électricien. Curieux et entreprenant, il est très heureux de participer au projet de restauration du temple de son village et a activement participé à collecter de l’argent sur place. 

Chinkyap is born and grew up in Lachen. He is the son of the Head of the Nyungney Ams (the fasting mothers). Chinkiap is very active and already has a lot of experience in construction, particularly he worked as carpenter and linemen, but is very interested to be trained in dry stone masonry. With a curious mind and a lot of dynamism, he is very happy to participate to the restoration project of his village’s temple. He also collected money from private donators for the project.

Bhaichung Phuchung , stagiaire, local trainee

Bhaichung connaît bien le projet de restauration du Mani Lhakhang de Lachen depuis 2013, il habite juste à côté. Grandement intéressé par le projet, il a décidé d'aider son village en participant activement au chantier. Bhaichung est diplômé en politique, histoire et anglais de l'université de Gangtok. Depuis il vit à Lachen et travaille dans différents domaines. Pour deux mois, il apprend la technique des constructions en pierres sèches sous la supervision de Robert Fierret. 

Bhaichung Phuchung knows about the Lachen Mani Lhakhang Restoration Project since 2013, he lives just nearby. Highly interested in the project, he is willing to help his village by participating actively to the project. Graduated in politics, history and English in Gangtok, he lives in Lachen and works in different fields. For two months, he is a trainee in dry stones masonry under the supervision of Robert Fierret.

Sarah Albrand, restauratrice peinture stagiaire, painting conservator

Étudiante en restauration-conservation du patrimoine, spécialisée en peintures, Sarah termine un cycle de cinq années d'études de restauration à l'Ecole de Condé à Paris.
Souhaitant se former plus particulièrement en peintures murales et ayant toujours été attirée par les voyages, elle a longuement mûri le projet d'accompagner Mélodie Bonnat sur l'un de ses chantiers.
La restauration des peintures murales du Mani Lhakhang de Lachen en coordination avec l'intervention des spécialistes de construction en pierre sèche est pour elle une occasion parfaite pour enrichir son expérience dans plusieurs domaines.

As a student in restoration and conservation of paintings, Sarah is just finishing her five years of conservation studies in Condé school, Paris.
Wishing to specialize herself in murals’ conservation and travel lover, she has been planning to accompany Mélodie Bonnat for one of her projects since a long time.

The Lachen's Mani Lhakhang's restoration, in coordination with the dry stone experts is for Sarah a perfect occasion to broaden her experience in various fields.

Elline Aubert, restauratrice peinture volontaire, painting conservator

Elline est diplômée en conservation restauration d’architecture, ameublement et mobilier de la haute école des arts de Bern, en Suisse, en 2015. Après un stage de 8 mois au sein de l’atelier de restauration de sculptures polychromées à l’Institut Royal du Patrimoine Artistique (IRPA) de Bruxelles, Belgique, elle réalise un rêve de longue date en rejoignant le projet de restauration du Lachen Mani Lhakhang, qui répond à son intérêt pour la conservation-restauration des objets de culte et pour la collaboration interculturelle.



Elline graduated in 2015 at the Bern College of Art in Switzerland, she is specialized in architecture and furniture. After an eight months long internship at IRPA, the Royal Institute of Artistique Heritage in Brussels, Belgium, she is glad to participate to the Lachen Mani Lhakhang Restoration Project where she experiences conservation-restoration of religious heritage and intercultural collaboration.
