Premier matin pluvieux. Pour le petit déjeuner, 20 oeufs durs pour tout le monde, du bon pain fait main par Anna, beurre, café, on ne manque de rien. A gauche, petite chaise sikkimaise traditionnelle avec revêtement en fourrure de yack.
First morning a little grey. For breakfast, 20 boiled eggs for everybody, bread freshly baked by Anna, butter, coffee, tea, we don't miss much. On the left of the photograph, a little traditionnal Sikkimese chair made with yack fur.
Palzor Lachenpa, maire de Lachen vient nous voir dans le temple pour nous souhaiter la bienvenue. Anie joue son rôle de traductrice Népalais/français à la perfection. On sent que les villageois apprécient énormément ce confort pour la discussion et Ajo Nyodor, le grand moine du monastère fait un petit discours pour chacun d'entre nous, pour nous souhaiter une longue vie et du succès dans le projet (mais aussi dans le mariage!) avant de nous remettre un kadak, écharpe blanche de bienvenue. Les villageois sont très touchés que nous venions de si loin pour restaurer leur temple et souhaitent faire le maximum pour nous aider.
Palzor Lachenpa, mayor of Lachen, first Pipon, comes to the temple to welcome us. Anie is a perfect trasnlator from Nepali to French and vice versa. We can feel that it is a realeaf for the local people to have a possibility to discuss so precisely with us all now. Therefore the head lama Ajo Nyodor feels like giving a small speech for all of us to wish us long life and success in the work before giving us a kadak, a white welcoming scarve. The villagers are very impressed that we come from so far and promise to help as much as possible to facilitate our stay and work.

Les menuisiers recoivent aussi une kadak. Prakash (avec la casquette) est très heureux de participer au projet. De gauche à droite, Baichung, qui va être un stagiaire de Robert, de dos Ajo Nyodor le grand moine, puis Kina Lama, le guardien des clés, Prakash et ses trois assistants, Dibbendup, Joel et Dilip, tous trois originaires du Bengal occidental au sud du Sikkim.

Dans le porche, le mur de refend qui est porteur, présente des dommages importants. Robert indique que l'absence de boutisses est une faiblesse du mur en cas de tremblement de terre. Il est nécessaire d'ouvrir le mur in the middle et d'insérer des boutisses de part en part du mur.
In the porch, the partition wall which is load bearing presents severe structural problems. Robert expalins that the absence of through stones in the original construction technique of the wall is a grave weakness in case of earthquake. It is necessary to open the wall in the middle and insert through stones that will go from side to side.
L'accès aux combles se fait de l'extérieur par une petite porte à l'étage au dessus de la cuisine sud.
From outside, on the south side, first floor it is possible to access the attic through a little door.
Prakash, Robert et Anie font un état des lieux ensemble pour planifier leur action commune.

Dans les combles, on peu observer de nombreux désordres de la maçonnerie, notamment le mur sud qui est penché vers le sud.
In the attic, we can observe numerous structural problems such as the south wall which is severly inclined towards south.

First lunch at Dorjee's hotel because our kitchen is still not ready.

Sur le toit de la cuisine sud, on peut voir le désordre majeur du mur sud qui s'ouvre en deux, faute de boutisses dans la technique de construction originelle. Cependant, la maçonnerie en pierre sèche a quand même résisté de nombreux tremblements de terre depuis sa construction en 1886. Prakash va contruire l'échaffaudage en bambou pour permettre à Robert de restaurer le mur.
On the roof, the state of the south wall is worrying. The wall is opening because it was originally built with through stones and suffered numerous earthquakes since 1886. But Robert is optimistic about the operation to carry out. Prakash will built a bamboo scafolding to allow this work to take place.
Une fois les opérations planifiées, Robert explique tout aux deux jeunes compagnons et distribue les tâches pour le lendemain.
After plannification done, Robert explains again everything to the two young Duty Companions and distributes tasks for the day after.
Sur le mur nord dans le hall, il y a une large plage d'enduit peint tombée qui laisse visible la maçonnerie. Robert explique qu'il va falloir réaliser des callages en insérant des pierres de la bonne taille dans tous les trous.
On the norht wall in the main hall, there is a large area where the painted plaster is damaged and fell down, leaving the dry stone masonry visible. Robert explains that it is necessary to insert small stones in each hole.
Le soir on se promène dans le village qui est tout en pentes et raccourcis. Anie et Robert continuent passionnement à parler boulot indifférents de la pluie et des sangsues.
In the evening we go for a walk in the village which is all in shortcuts and slope. Anie and Robert continue discussing with passion about work, careless of the rain and leechees.
Sur la rue principale de Lachen, nous rencontrons des femmes de Lachen qui prient dans le Lachen Mani Lhakhang. Nous les informons de notre arrivée et du démarrage imminent du travail.
On Lachen Bazar we meet a few Nyungney Ams (fasting mothers). We inform them about our arrival and that we are going to start the work very soon.
On voit quand même poindre un peu de ciel bleu aux alentours de six heure...
There is at least a little bit of blue sky in the evening.
