Inscription au revers des peintures - Inscription at the back of the paintings

Des fragments de peinture murale tombés du mur en 2011 lors du tremblement de terre s'avèrent être peints, soit sur de la toile, soit sur du papier. Après nettoyage des restes de mortier au revers, nous pouvons voir des inscriptions écrites à l'encre, en tibétain cursif. En 2013 lors de la première phase du projet, la plupart des inscriptions avaient été nettoyées, consolidées et documentées, une partie avait même été transcrite sur l'ordinateur et traduite en anglais au Namgyal Institute of Tibetology. 

Some of the painted fragments fallen from the wall during the earthquake in 2011 are indeed painted on paper or on canvas. After cleaning of the plaster remains at the back of the fragments, we can see inscription written with black ink in Tibetan. In 2013, during the first phase of the restoration project, most of the inscriptions were cleaned, consolidated and documented. One part was even transcribed in Tibetan on the computer and translated into English at the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology.

Le fragment (ici non nettoyé apparaît en marron), trouve sa place sur le bord d'un grand fragment qui a déjà été consolidé et doublés en 2013, mais pas encore refixé sur le mur.

The fragment (here it is not cleaned and appears brown), finds its original location on the edge of a bigger fragment that was already consolidated and lined in 2013, but still not fixed back on the wall.

En 2013, le grand fragment d'où provient notre petit bout ressemblait à ceci, vue du revers: des restes d'enduit sont collées sur plusieurs épaisseurs de toile et de papier.

In 2013, the bigger fragment were the little fragment belongs was looking like this at the back: plaster remains are stuck on several layers of paper and loose textile.

Le revers et la face ont été nettoyés et consolidés, mis à plat et finalement doublés au revers. Ici Eliza consolide la couche picturale.

The back and the face ere both cleaned and consolidated, flatten and finally lined on a reinforcing textile support. Here, Eliza is consolidating the paint layer.

Vue de face le grand fragment après consolidation, nettoyage et dévernissage. Nous avons identifié qu'il provient du hall principal, mur nord, à l'angle de la porte de la cuisine. Le papier et les toiles servaient probablement à renforcer les peintures devant être peintes au niveau du linteau de la porte de la cuisine.

View of the face of the big fragment after consolidation, cleaning and varnish removal. We identified that the big fragment comes from the main hall, northern wall, at the corner of the door that communicates with the northern kitchen. The papers and canvases stuck on the walls were probably put to reinforce the paintings that has to be painted on top of the doors' lintels.

Nous avons présenté aux moines de Lachen les inscriptions afin qu'ils puissent nous les traduire ou bien commenter.

We presented photographs of the inscriptions to the monks of Lachen so that they can comment and translate them.

Ajo Nyodor avait déjà participé à la traduction du grand fragment en 2013.

Ajo Nyodor already participated to the translation and comment of the big fragment's inscription in 2013. 

Sur notre nouvelle inscription se trouve une date notée dans le style du calendrier lunaire tibétain (coq d'eau). Il n'est pas facile de retrouver la date du calendrier grégorien en usage aujourd'hui. On sait que l'année 1993 était une année coq-eau, sachant que les cycles ont 60 ans, est-ce que notre date se rapproche de 1886, date présumée de la construction du Mani Lhakhang?

On the new little inscription we found this year, a date is inscribed but it follows the Tibetan calendar (water hen). It is not easy today to find the corresponding date in the Gregorian calendar in use today. We know that 1993 was a water hen year, since cycles are of 60 years, can we find a date that approaches 1886, the presumed date of the Mani Lhakhang's construction?

C'est une occasion pour Ajo Nyodor de se replonger dans l'histoire du monastère afin d'éclaircir ce problème de date.

It is an occasion for Ajo Nyodor to search back into his history books about the monastery's past, and try to solve this date problem.

A l'aide d'un vieux calendrier tibétain,  les moines essaient de retrouver la date sans succès pour l'instant.

With the help of an old Tibetan calendar, the monks try to find the date, but without success for now.
